IKEA cutlery production is a global enterprise, it is exported from China to distribution centres across the world. Travelling from the stainless steel factory in Shanghai, to the shaping factory in Jieyang City, to Shenzhen port, to Cuxhaven port Germany, to the Dortmund distribution centre Germany, to either the Delft IKEA store or on towards Europoort, to Waterford port and finally to Dublin IKEA. This extra 1000km of travel combined with the different VAT rates in the Netherlands and within Ireland has lead to a cost difference of €2 for the same package of cutlery. Out of the products on our table cutlery has the longest durability and life span. However are the costs in both wastage of material and energy output equivalent to the amount of time cutlery spends in our kitchen drawers and on our tables?
